Forcing Windows 7.5 "Mango" update

Posted by: Mark Fitzpatrick

I absolutely love my Windows 7 phone (Samsung Focus rev 1.3). I love it so much I couldn't bring myself to put the pre-RTM releases of Mango on it for fear of bricking it. Now Mango is out with rather triumphant fanfare and it still isn't showing up. Waiting patiently is not going well for me. I really want this update now so what's a developer supposed to do? Why cheat of course. Having waited days in the past for updates for my Nook Color to be recognized or rolled I really didn't want to wait... [More]

Z-solutions releases Z-CMS open source content management system.

Posted by: Mark Fitzpatrick

Content management solutions can be just as important to a web developer as having a good set of tools. Each client and application has different requirements and budgets, so no there isn't really a good one-size-fits-all solution for a CMS. Well, looks as if we have another choice, and it looks beautiful. Z-Solutions appropriately named Z-CMS is an ASP.net CMS based on the .Net 4 framework. It supports such necessary items as users and roles, themes for easy style changes, and especially module... [More]

Steve Jobs, CEO and Founder of Apple, Steps Down

Posted by: Mark Fitzpatrick

Today, Wednestday August 24th 2011, is a day of mixed feelings. Steve Jobs has stepped aside as CEO of one of the most powerful and influential technology companies in the world, Apple. The letter was efficient, terse, and leaves many a question unanswered. Throughout i... [More]

Bing Webmaster Tools Launches New Update

Posted by: Mark Fitzpatrick

I just noticed that on Wednesday June 8th, Bing launched an update to it's Webmaster Tools. The update, called Honey Badger (and I thought some of the Android and Ubuntu version names were strange) adds a number of useful features such as the ability to change the crawl rate during peak business hours and adding pre-set crawl settings for sites that use AJAX. Also included are stability and UI updates as well as management tools to grant other users the ability restrict webmaster tools access to... [More]

Caphyon Releases Advanced Installer 8.2

Posted by: Mark Fitzpatrick

This morning I received a fantastic notice in my email, Caphyon has released version 8.2 of their Advanced Installer product. If you're not familiar with Advanced Installer and develop any windows applications you should be. I discovered them last year while researching for options to the standard Visual Studio 2010 Setup project, which just didn't work for me. I needed something stronger, that required less of my time writing custom actions (or better yet, no time at all) and was priced reasona... [More]

Skype purchased by Microsoft for $8.5 billion.

Posted by: Mark Fitzpatrick

Microsoft announced today that it will be purchasing Skype for $8.5 billion in cash from Skype's intvestors. This move cancels the need for Skype's Initial Public Offerring (IPO) of stock. For the investors, this is a fantastic deal as they avoid having to parcel out the sale of their own shares over a number of years in order to get a return on investment. For us, the acquisition is a little unclear as to what we will receive out of this. Installed with WindowsI'm positive we will see Skype bei... [More]
